In 2011, voters were asked to consider the following question:

"At present, the UK uses the "first past the post" system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the "alternative vote" system be used instead?"

The vote was as follows:

• Shropshire: YES = 28.37% (27,221 votes) and NO = 71.63% (68,732 votes).
• West Midlands Region: YES = 28.52% (461,847) and NO = 71.48% (1,157,772)
• UK Result: YES = 32.10% (6,152,607 votes) and NO = 67.90% (13,013,123 votes)

As more people voted NO than YES, the "alternative vote" system was NOT adopted, and voters would still use the "first past the post" system to elect MPs.
